Analytical methods for trace amounts of chemicals in sediment samples by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) were reviewed. Various chemicals were classified in volatile organic compounds (VOC), semivolatile organic compounds and nonvolatile chemicals, and the pretreatment techniques of analysis in each category were described. Especially, the analytical techniques of semivolatile organic compounds were commented in detail because of their toxicity, persistent and biological accumulation. The analytical procedures for the chemicals consist of three steps: (1) extraction; (2) clean-up; and (3) detection. The useful techniques in each step were illustrated with the examples of the analysis of actual chemicals, such as PCB, dioxins, chlorobenzenes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). In addition, purge-and-trap and derivatization methods were showed in the chapters of VOC and nonvolatile chemicals' respectively.
